The blue economy is all about using our oceans and coastal areas in smart and sustainable ways. At IGNITE Atlantic, we support startups that are coming up with exciting new ideas to help coastal communities thrive. These companies are changing the game with their innovative approaches, making a big impact on our oceans and the people who live near them.

In this blog post, we’re shining a spotlight on five ocean-related startups that have been part of IGNITE. These companies are leading the way with their new technologies and approaches, making a real difference in coastal communities.

1. Katchi

Katchi is developing a SmartNet using herding and deterring technology and seeks to deploy uncrewed service vessels (USVs) to improve the efficiency of conventional trawl fishing.

Want to learn even more? This video by RBC spotlights Katchi’s visionary endeavors, showcasing their extraordinary potential to reshape the landscape of trawl fishing. With their trailblazing advancements, Katchi is making waves (yes, we see what they did there! 😁) and setting the stage for a transformative future in the industry.

2. Discover the Strait

Discover the Strait brings local Northumberland Strait fishermen together on one platform to offer visitors unforgettable, authentically Nova Scotian, experiences on the beautiful Northumberland Strait. By bringing local boat owners together, the platform fulfills all customer touch points to put visitors on the wharf, ready to board a boat and experience the beauty of the Northumberland Strait.

3. ShanDaph Oysters

ShanDaph Oysters, established in May 1999, has roots stretching back over thirty years. Owner and operator Philip Docker’s grandparents played a pivotal role in reestablishing sustainable oyster farming on the pristine shores of Big Island, Nova Scotia. The native oyster seed they set in the 1960s and 1970s has since matured into productive oyster beds. ShanDaph oysters are grown in suspended units within the nutrient-rich waters of their farm, ensuring optimal growth conditions and minimizing environmental impact from less than a millimeter to harvest size over 76 millimeters, a process taking three to five years.

Since the first oysters were set in 1999, ShanDaph Oysters has grown steadily while adhering to sustainable practices and maintaining premium quality. Their oysters are served in fine dining establishments, special events, and to individual connoisseurs

4. Dockport Ltd

DockPort Ltd‘s innovative system revolutionizes oyster farming with its sustainable, easy-to-use design. It dramatically improves product quality and boosts productivity while reducing labor. Dockport cuts down handling by up to 70%, allowing oysters to grow naturally with the help of wave action, which shapes and strengthens their shells. By maximizing space and utilizing natural processes, their technology ensures higher yields and better quality oysters with less effort. Founders Philip Docker, a marine biologist, and Ernie Porter, an engineer focused on sustainability, created Dockport to tackle key farming challenges, making oyster farming more efficient and environmentally-friendly.

5. GreenEarth Technologies

Green Oil Solutions is currently transitioning into GreenEarth Technologies and will continue as a leader in eco-filtration and water sensing in Canada, developing state-of-the-art solutions to solve environmental problems in our waters. Their bilge filtration systems remove oil and other contaminants from bilge water before it is discharged overboard. They use innovative technologies to monitor water cleanliness and are developing an affordable oil in water sensor to ensure clean bilge water discharge. They are also exploring the adaptability of their sensor to monitor drinking water in remote communities where contamination poses a serious health risk.

At IGNITE, we are proud to support these innovative companies. We believe in fostering an environment where ideas can grow and succeed. The achievements of these startups show the incredible potential of the blue economy and inspire others to explore how they can contribute to a sustainable future.

With the help of our partners, we aim to continue pushing the boundaries of innovation in the maritime sector. Our goal is to ensure that the benefits of these advancements reach all coastal communities. Looking ahead, IGNITE is committed to being a key resource for innovative businesses throughout rural Nova Scotia, helping them make a lasting, positive impact on our world.
